Hayes transcript of forty-niners diary, 1849-1849.

Summary: Typescript copy of a diary of forty-niner Benjamin Hayes covering the portion of his journey from Socorro, New Mexico to Warner's Ranch in southern California, September 1849 to February 1850. The diary contains detailed observations of their route, trees and plants, animals and fish, illness and death, other companies encountered, towns visited, and Indian villages. It also contains a summary of miles traveled per day. He describes San Xavier Mission's interior and adjacent Tohono O'odham village, Tucson, trading with the Pima Indians, and crossing the Colorado.

Biographical note: Lawyer and forty-niner, Benjamin Hayes traveled from Independence, Missouri on Sept. 10, 1849 and arrived in Los Angeles on February 26, 1850.
